Just so you know, this is totally stolen from the TED Talk by Shawn Achor called The Happy Secret to Better Work (which I recommend watching: http://www.ted.com/talks/shawn_achor_the_happy_secret_to_better_work).
Basically, if for 22 days in a row* everyday you:
- journal three things you are grateful for
- write about one good experience from that day
- meditate (maybe even just for five minutes)
- do one random act of kindness (write to someone you know and say how much you appreciate their friendship, give up your seat on a bus, etc.)
…then you will be significantly happier and more positive. It really works as shown in studies and in my own experience. I’m not saying it’s a miracle cure that will fix you up in five minutes but it certainly makes a difference. After all, only 10% of your happiness is determined by circumstance and the rest is by your outlook (according to science), so you can train yourself to be a really happy person even if you have some pretty awful things in your life.
Just try it. What’s there to lose?
*Ideally you would carry this on forever to keep up the effects. But if you can only manage 22 days or even that is too long, that’s okay. Every little bit helps. And in time maybe you’d be able to do this daily.
